Ghana’s Sports Betting Market Shifts Digital as Apps and Smartphones Rise
23 October 2026
As the Ghanaian sports betting market evolves, app-based betting powered by mobile payments is increasingly the driver of growth. With over 70% of all bets now placed through smartphones, the market is solidifying its transition from physical shops and internet cafes toward digital platforms. Football remains the cornerstone of demand, with major leagues commanding end-user interest. However, basketball, tennis, esports, and live betting are gaining traction.
Football Remains King
Football was the initial touchpoint for Ghana’s explosion of betting. In 2025, internet-enabled sports betting gross win hit 903.5 million U.S. dollars, up from 729.8 million the year prior. One 2026 industry report estimates that over 75% of wagers are still football related, with the English Premier League, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League named as top draws.
Mobile Money and Smartphones Drive New Behavior
The growth of mobile money networks is changing how Ghanaians bet. Around 70% of bets in 2026 are placed through mobile phones, according to one industry report. Another report notes that up to 77% of Ghana’s internet traffic stems from mobile devices. This means that the ubiquity of smartphones, along with the ease of mobile money for deposits and withdrawals, is unlocking more frequent, mobile-first betting. For many, the smartphone itself has replaced the internet café as the device of choice.
Top Apps Dominate the Ecosystem
The Ghanaian betting app ecosystem is growing crowded, but SportyBet currently leads the way. One recent 2026 industry snapshot pegs SportyBet at 57.14% of the market in terms of relative demand share, while Betway fell from 25.29% to 19.64% over a six-week period in 2026. Those legged ahead but others are on the radar: 1xBet, MSport, 22Bet, MelBet, and Bangbet appear among the most downloaded sports apps in 2026.
Competition Is Ramping Up
While the betting market remains regulated and its operators must register with the Gaming Commission of Ghana, the iGamingAfrika report pegs around 73 operators active in 2026, with more expected to enter the market. The strong growth of digital betting apps is increasingly crucial as publishers jockey for dominance in Ghana, the demand for betting and payment services is projected to keep rising. In terms of total download counts, the top of the heap is SportyBet, with MSport, Betway, 22Bet and 1xBet among those competing for position.

Football Will Remain Central, but Other Sports and Betting Forms Grow
Even though punters still predominantly bet on football, the product mix in Ghana is quickly diversifying. Basketball, soccer, esports, and tennis are seeing growth, as are other forms of wagering like live betting. Beyond sports, operators are also cross-selling casino-style offerings to their core betting customers. This not only ranges the product portfolio of the biggest players, but also lands them new entrants to the digital sector.
Regulation and Compliance Are Larger Pieces of the Conversation
In combination with a move to a digital battleground for operators, regulators are increasingly pressing for transparency and strict compliance. In line with that pressure, the legal age for online casino betting is 18 and over, and the Gaming Commission regulates operators.
The upshot is that Ghana’s sports betting market is still young, but evolving fast, driven by technology that makes the internet more accessible, then the soccer league gets noticed. With over 650 million Ghanaians using the internet, and the majority of that share via mobile, the future of the market looks digital, mobile and expansively diverse.
