Editorial standards

This page says how NewsFoxes handles the things a reader cannot check from the outside: where the text came from, what we do when it is wrong, and which links on this site are paid for.

Sourcing

Every report names its author and its date. Reports in the archive were filed by the bylined writer at the date shown. Where a story was built on another outlet’s reporting, the outbound link in the text goes to that outlet, and it is the source we stand behind — not our summary of it.

Corrections

Write to [email protected] with the address of the page and what is wrong. Factual errors are corrected on the page, and the correction is stated on the page rather than folded silently into the text. Figures that were correct on the publication date are not errors: archive pages carry a note saying they are kept as filed.

Guest contributions

We publish contributions from outside the newsroom. They appear under the author’s own name or desk, in the language they were filed in, and they are collected in International so that a reader can tell them from our reporting. We do not edit their outbound links, and those links are not endorsements by this desk.

Commercial links

The Partner network strip at the foot of every page is commercial: those are paid placements to sites outside our control. They are marked nofollow, they open in a new tab, and no one in the newsroom decides editorial coverage on the basis of them. Some guest contributions in International also carry the author’s own commercial links. Nothing in our news, business, sport or culture reporting is paid for.

Reference guides in Explained are written and checked by this desk. We use software for research, spelling and layout; we do not publish a page that nobody here has read.
